I made it through the beehive section over the weekend, and had some problems starting up the swarm--see photos here. I ripped out seven rows (I'm not sure why I believed they looked fine up to that point), and am now just about where I was before ripping. It looks much better now. I did not put in a lifeline, but I know that I should.
Who out there is using a lifeline? Have you had to use it?

no lifelines, just markers between pattern repeats. that was enough for me to keep on track with the pattern. tinking back was never an option. I'd be dropping stitches like crazy and have to start over. Lucky for me, that never happened.
I've knitted a lot of lace and I've never used a lifeline. Like Terri, I find it most helpful to use markers for every single pattern repeat across a row when I'm knitting a larger project like the Bee Fields Shawl. That way, even if I haven't made a mistake, but simply have to get up to do something in the middle of a row, it's easy to figure out where I was when you put my knitting down.
Wait a minute, that's not when _you_ put my knitting down, but rather when _I_ put my knitting down. Can you tell it's been a long day setting up my classroom and attending teacher meetings? ;)
